Changes in Nubian Wedding Ceremonies

Changes in Nubian Wedding Ceremonies

(p.171) Chapter 9 Changes in Nubian Wedding Ceremonies
Nubian Ceremonial Life

Samiha aL-Katsha

American University in Cairo Press

Wedding ceremonies and festivities connected with marriage were among the most important public events in the social life of the Nubians. These activities had several different purposes in addition to uniting two families and cementing bonds between kin groups already related through previous marriages. Among these purposes were the assurance of a happy and prosperous life for the bridal couple and the provision of happiness and entertainment for the village and district. This chapter is a description of the celebrations and an analysis of changes that have occurred in customs connected with marriage in the resettled village of Kanuba. These changes are best seen when compared with the traditional form of the ceremonies described by older informants who still remember them.
