Sustainability and the Green Economy
Sustainability and the Green Economy
This chapter begins with a brief discussion of sustainable development (SD), defined as a dynamic process that enables people to improve their quality of living in ways that simultaneously protect and enhance the earth’s life support systems and preserve these resources for generations to come. It then explains the “cradle-to-cradle” (C2C) concept, which is important for SD. In the C2C system waste is not disposed of but recycled into usable resources. Used products are returned to the original manufacturer or to other manufacturers for reprocessing into a new product, thereby reducing the amounts of raw materials needed for production. The remainder of the chapter discusses a proposed SD road map, the basic tools for SD, hidden tools for SD, SD facilitators, and development of a green economy.
Keywords: sustainable development, cradle-to-cradle system, recycling, green economy
