This chapter seeks to understand the geography of the Nile Delta in the centuries before the Arab conquest of Egypt in the mid-7th Century A.D in order to establish a baseline against which to compare subsequent change in the navigational geography of the Nile Delta. It examines the Nile descriptions of Herodotus, Pseudo-Scylax, Diodorus Siculus, Strabo, Pliny, and others, and assesses their potential in reconstructing ancient Nile Delta geographies in the contemporary landscape. It also assesses the contributions of early cartography in the form of the Geography of Ptolemy Claudius, and the Madaba and Peutinger maps of the Nile Delta.
