Overview of Sectarian Incidents (2008–2011)
Looking at the final 3 years of Mubarak rule, this chapter provides a quantitative description of the nature of sectarian incidents: their frequency, causes, actors, locations, and key characteristics. This data is compiled by day-to-day monitoring of the press. It finds three main triggers: non-religious, small-scale disputes that escalate into communal attacks; gender relations between people of different religions; and the renovation or construction of churches.
