Training the Troops: The Indian Army in Egypt, Eritrea, and Libya, 1940–42
This chapter examines the ‘approach to battle,’ the battles and lessons learnt by the Indian Army formations in the North African and East African campaigns, concentrating mainly on the experience of 4th Indian Division. Discusses the stringent training programs which contributed to the fighting capacity of the Indian Army, the biggest volunteer army during the Second World War, and the exigencies of war which undermined them.
