This chapter discusses the improvement in women's economic independence in Syria through increased levels of women's education, their push toward leadership positions in religious, professional, and political arenas, government initiatives. It discusses the progress that Syrian women are making in dismantling patriarchal and legal barriers to full citizenship rights may ultimately have a reforming and democratizing effect on the family, civil society, religion, and the state.
