While the upper officers in Muhammad Ali’s army spoke Turkish, the majority of the Egyptian soldiers spoke only Arabic. Schools were founded to train Egyptian officers, using textbooks translated into Turkish from European languages, as Muhammad Ali based his military reforms on European models. Turkish military vocabulary was introduced into Egyptian Arabic.
