The Turkish books printed during Muhammad Ali’s reign served his purposes of administrative, military, and educational reform, and fulfilled the cultural needs of the Turks residing in Egypt. Later, at the turn of the twentieth century, the main emphasis of Turkish-language publications turned to political opposition and reform as promoted by the Young Turk movement. Throughout the century, books on poetry, literature, history, geography, science, and religion formed a large part of the Turkish-language publishing in Cairo.
