Al-Nahda's movement specifically reflected an appreciation of the linkages between anticolonial resistance and the struggles against social and political injustice, and religious sectarianism and dogma. The North African region, including Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya, was still under direct colonial rule, albeit under different and various pretexts. Egypt in the late 1940s and early 1950s maintained a special status whereby the British mustered almost total control over the government, and British troops maintained a strong presence in the country. The regimes of the countries that participated in the 1948 War in response to the creation of the state of Israel, including Iraq, faced the brunt of criticism for their armies' humiliating defeat in Palestine.
