The Final Seven Years

The Final Seven Years

(p.239) 8 The Final Seven Years
Caliph of Cairo

Paul E. Walker

American University in Cairo Press

It seems odd to include the last seven years of al-Hakim's reign. It must point to a dramatic change, an alteration in the character of his rule or of himself that is clearly notable seven years prior to his disappearance. Ibn Ilyas's name was for the following seven years added to the coinage, all official documents and decrees, flags and banners, and the Friday sermon. No one in the realm could have missed it, or failed to wonder what this extraordinary action really meant. Historians belonging to the two major Christian groups, the Copts and the Melkites, both insist that al-Hakim himself took a special interest during these final years in some of this rebuilding and that in each case became attached personally, perhaps spiritually, to a prominent monk belonging to their own group.
