What Would Sayyid Qutb Say? Some Reflections on Video Clips
Video clips dominated the Arab satellite television but the ubiquity of video clips may overstate their popularity. Video clips are free content in an economically troubled business, paid for not by the networks that broadcast them, but by mobile phone service providers and music producers because they advertise their products and business, and they can create stars that can generate high fees for live performance. The music must be popular before providers and producers make video clips, and this type of music may be categorized as both commodity and culture. However, the commercialism of video clips is so much a part of the art form that defies both common sense and critical sense. Some say that one of the impediments of a better understanding of the significance of video clips is the tendency of observers to see what they only want to see.
