Lane left Egypt around August 29, 1835, when he cashed a note drawn on himself for £55 with A. C. Harris traveling with his former neighbor, Mr. Gosset at Wilkinson's house in Thebes. Comfortable in Eastern dress in Egypt, Lane felt awkward wearing it anywhere else, even on a British island colony in the Mediterranean, but the beard was to become a permanent part of his life. Nefeeseh was virtually a member of the family herself now. She had been about twelve when Lane left. Now, at fourteen, she had made the physical transition from childhood to early womanhood. She had changed, and so did Lane's attitude toward her, for the tiresome observations about her improvement disappear from his letters.
