A Burst of Holiness
A Burst of Holiness
Matthew I (#87, 1378–1408)
The life describes Matthew in terms full of echoes from the stories of the great saints of the Egyptian church, taking the role of the patriarch ordaining priest. He worked as a shepherd and began his ascetic practices as a very young man. Matthew ripped his bishop's liturgical garments to shreds so as to be sent away. He was ordained priest at the tender age of eighteen, joined the Monastery of St. Antony, sojourned in Jerusalem until his spiritual gifts began to attract unwelcome attention, and then returned to St. Antony. Once installed as patriarch, Matthew became known for his piety and almsgiving: he visited monasteries and convents and provided for their needs, sought out the poor, and distributed all that he possessed, among Muslims as well as Christians.
