This chapter examines education and learning in the Fayoum Oasis in Egypt during the first millennium. During this period, there was no school building nor a set curriculum established and administered by a governmental authority. However, preserved texts, including writings in papyrus, provide sufficient materials to understand the methods and goals of learning. The evidence from Fayoum suggests that the terms school and education are not narrowly defined in modern terms.
