Collapse and Recovery
Collapse and Recovery
This chapter describes another set of rapid changes to the monarchy occurring after the death of Pepy II and featuring the rise of a Theban regime that opposed the kings of the Ninth/Tenth Dynasty. The rulers who followed the Sixth Dynasty as rulers at Memphis are generally classified as the Seventh and Eighth dynasties, probably to be regarded as a single entity. The latter part of the Sixth Dynasty saw the state on the verge of collapse and the authority of the Memphite pharaoh undermined—so much so that it would embolden a Herakleopolitan king, Akhtoy, to challenge the monarchy. However, the Herakleopolitan success would be short-lived, as Thebes would eventually oppose and usher in the fall of the Herakleopolitan kingdom and come to challenge the pharaohs of the Ninth and Tenth dynasties.
