This chapter explains the work that was carried out in uncovering, cleaning, and restoring the iconographic programs in the ancient Church of the Virgin at Dayr al-Suryan: the earliest layer of wall paintings is dated to around the time of the Arab invasion of Egypt in the seventh century, later ones as late as the thirteenth century; the eighteenth-century layer was primarily added to cover the wall paintings. The chapter starts by presenting the stratigraphy of the decorated layers. It also highlights the characteristics of the paint layers and mortars, and the state of preservation. The reconstruction of the paint layers (chiefly second and third phase) is then addressed.
