The house under study, is called the manzil, or palace, of Qaytbay. It is named after Sultan Qaytbay because his name is repeated in more than one location in the house. The Creswell archives of the Rare Books and Special Collections Library of the American University in Cairo have chosen to discuss the case of Manzil Qaytbay because the authors believe it is an example of the effectiveness of old photographs as decision-making tools during the development of conservation policy. Manzil Qaytbay has only one small street façade and entrance on Harat al-Maridani. It is reached from two of Historic Cairo's major streets, al-Darb al-Ahmar and al-Khiyamiyya Street. Photographic archives are an indispensable source of information on how historical buildings change through time.
