A set of nine images in Creswell's photographic archives are labeled “Khan al-Khalily.” The matching of the pictures with the in situ monuments in the Khan al-Khalili pedestrian district reveals that they are of the gate of the wakala of Sultan al-Ghuri and the two gates attached to it, namely the Bab al-Badistan and the gate of Sikkat al-Qabwa. The object of this chapter is to investigate the historical and architectural context of this ensemble composed of the four abovementioned units. The first part of the chapter demonstrates certain anomalies of the ensemble and attempts an architectural analysis of it; the second part attempts to reconstruct the covered market, a type of building that has been rarely studied in the literature on Islamic architecture.
